Friday....... week end.. two days holiday.... or is it? No. A memo was passed last week about the start of our Saturday review classes in lieu of the national achievement test comes late February or early March of 2010. Meaning, we are oblige to report on Saturdays. I am not complaining. I know it is part of my duty as an educator. But then, is it not useless to start the review this early? Whether we accept it or not, students and pupils of today are very different. They have less retentivity. They have very short span of interest and most of them are less privileged to eat the proper nutrition they need for their mind and brain to work. A handful of them eats thrice a day. Most of them eat twice daily or worse, once a day. You can argue all you want. I am talking about my own class. This situation is unknown to those in the office as they do not mingle with the lowest member of the system. Most of my class would be absent because they would help their parents earn a living or attend to their younger siblings as their parents are working.
The honest objective of this review is to raise the performance level of the school, the division and the region. Hoping that the students and pupils will attain the skills they ought to have. Teachers teach. I teach. But then, no matter how hard you teach and how hard you motivate, if your clients are not ready, starving and are stressed, will there be learning? Honestly, I doubt.

ReplyDeleteso far, they are.... but in the coming days, i can not tell. there was even a time when i had to bring a pupil to the school canteen because she was complaining of stomach ache and when i asked her what she had for breakfast, her answer is NONE... so as her teacher, to the rescue man ako with a cup of hot choco and banana cue. (mind you, this is not the first time i had such case)... see? what learning will she have if she can not even absorb the lesson as she is so concerned with her growling stomach? but of course, the blame should be on the irresponsible parents. anyway, i am still enjoying doing my work.... i just do hope and pray, di ini mangyari sa mga batit ko...=)

ReplyDeleteSolita, tama ka didi. The plight of poor students is really heartbreaking. Pirang beses na ako nag-UKA after watching TV shows on kids who have to do terrible jobs para lang may pang-balon, aysus. Kaya bow ako saimo, manay, for showing such concern for your students.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. San nagtuturo pa ako dida, I had students who were so poor, they couldn't even pay for their transpo. Maski may STFAP an UP, kay late man nare release an kuwarta, an nangyayari, dili nagsusulod sa klase kay baon naman sa utang sinda. Kaya lain dapat pagtarawahan ina na nagsa sideline an mga maestra kay kun irog sana na gutom an estudyante mo, obligado ka pakaonon kay makaluluoy man. Ako sadto, may mga gin tatagan pa ako sin pamasahe nan allowance (panglunch) para lang magsulod sa klase ko. Hayyyyy....

ReplyDeleteAmu nanggad ini an tunay na problema didi sa Pinas. Sa tambak na paiskuwelahun, di na nagka aratulgaran an mga obligasyones, ipasa sa maestra an problema. Pero ok lang kay mayad na baga an nagbubulig kesa inbubuligan ha? Sukat baya an advisory class ko last section san Grade 6 kaya an true picture of poverty kita ko everyday... sana lang magbarati man ini na mga eskuwela ko na di tulos mag-arasawa, magtarapos man muna kay para di na makairog sa buhay ninda nyan... an example ko, pirmi ako mismo! Aram yan nira Cherie nan Grace kaya yada na lamang an boot ko sa mga eskuwela ko baya.... Hay ambot na drama ko man!
